The reeds I sell through this site are made exactly as I make them for myself, with one important difference: I usually play on reeds made the same day; whereas, when I make reeds for others I spread the process out over several days, which lends more stability and longevity to the reed.
Sorry, but I do not provide for "special order" requests, nor do I offer reeds in different "strengths." The reason for this is that one of my main goals as a reed maker is consistency. While every reed is a little different, because of natural variations inherent in cane, my goal is to provide you with a reed that is as close to the same as the last one I sent you as possible. The only way this can happen is if I test and adjust each and every reed with the same stringent criteria in mind every time. If you like one of my reeds, you will probably like all of my reeds. If my reeds are not a good match for you, then chances are they never will be, and you will be better off trying someone else's next time.

For those interested in the particulars, I currently utilize the following when making oboe reeds:
Cane: The best I can find! This varies from season to season, but I only use stuff that WORKS. My livelihood depends on it!
Gouge: I use an Opus 1 gouger, built by Robin Driscoll. This gouge is an exact copy of the one used by John Mack in the 1980's, and produces vibrant reeds with a depth and complexity that has become the hallmark of a refined, distinctly "American" oboe sound. The measurement is roughly .60 mm at the center, and .47 at the sides.
Shape: I am currently using the Jeanne "X" shape
, which I find is a great match for the Opus 1 gouge. My reeds finish at or near 69mm in length (on 46 mm staples), crow a "C" in 3 octaves, and play at A=440 (on my Hiniker oboe). The sound is both covered and compact, with great response, dynamics, projection, and intonation throughout the oboe's range.
Staple: I use Stevens #2 "Pro" thin-walled (silver) staples, at 46mm.
My current turn-around time is 1-2 weeks for orders of four reeds or less, 2-3 weeks for larger orders, and is subject to change without notice.
All Marzluf Reeds are guaranteed to arrive without cracks or damage, and with a good seal along the sides. Otherwise, all reed and cane sales are final.
